World Junior Quick Hits
Gold Medal - Canada
Silver Medal - Czechia
Bronze Medal - USA
Bedard’s Historic Tournament
The projected #1 overall pick in the upcoming NHL draft did not disappoint in this years tournament, setting the Canadian record for most points in a single tournament (9G 14A 23Pts), and most career points at the world juniors (36 points in 16 games). The 17 year old handled the pressure all tournament long, even after opening the tournament with a loss to Czechia. Bedard’s OT winner vs Slovakia may go down as one of the top goals ever at the World Juniors.
Introducing Adam Gajan
Many did not have Adam Gajan slotted to be the starter for Slovakia, but the NAHL Chippewa Steel goaltender stole the show, with impressive performances vs Canada, and the United States. Gajan posted a .936 save % and 2.40 GAA over 4 games, and became one of the crowd favorites early in the tournament. After an impressive start in the NAHL, Gajan joined the Green Bay Gamblers of the USHL just prior to the tournament.
Bronze Medal for USA
After a slip up vs Slovakia in the preliminary round, falling 6-3, the United States responded with wins vs Switzerland, Finland and Germany in the quarters before falling to Canada in the semifinals 6-2. The US roster had some surprising omissions, including Ty Voit and Sasha Pastujov, both putting up impressive points in the OHL. Logan Cooley (Arizona Coyotes), Jimmy Snuggerud (St Louis Blues), and Cutter Gauthier (Philadelphia Flyers) led the USA up front, with Luke Hughes (New Jersey Devils) as the focal point on defense. The US would take the bronze medal in a wild 8-7 OT win vs Sweden.
Canada Takes Gold
One of the most talented teams put together for this tournament on paper, Team Canada had all the hype and pressure, and found a way to get it done. The 5-2 loss to Czechia was a lesson for this group, and they responded quickly, outscoring their opponents in the remaining preliminary games 27-3. Their OT thriller vs Slovakia may have been the game of the tournament, outside of the gold medal OT win vs Czechia. Dylan Guenther (Arizona Coyotes) showed his scoring instincts and release throughout the tournament, finishing with 7G 3A in 10 games. Joshua Roy (Montreal Canadians) and Logan Stankoven (Dallas Stars) both finished top 5 in points, but were drivers for Canada, doing the small details needed to win big games. Thomas Milic, undrafted in the 2022 NHL draft, was key when called upon between the pipes, coming up big vs the US and Czechia in the gold medal game.
