Highlight Video Tips
The use of video has exploded in tier I and tier II youth hockey, and has become a key development tool at the junior level. Below are some tips and tricks for recording, and creating highlight videos, with some tips for players on how to use this same video for development purposes.
If you have a video camera, or even an iPad or iPhone, recording your son or daughter’s games could either be a burden or a fun activity. Investing in a tripod is a must. Inexpensive options (under $30) are all over the internet, but also check your local thrift shops for older tripods. Finding a mount for your camera or device is very easy, as most tripods from the last 20 years have the same, screw in connection. Video editors can zoom, crop and edit video in many ways, but a video with shake is difficult to fix.
Find the right spot. Filming too close to the glass can cause issues with the clarity of the game, depending on camera capabilities. We encourage videographers and parents to find a location preferably above glass level, but still in range where jersey numbers are easy to identify. Outside of videos for goalies, try to be in a centered location when looking at the rink.
Limit movement. Before the game, pan back and fourth, finding the spot where the end boards are in view. When filming a fast pace game like hockey, the initial reaction is to follow the play as much as possible, with the action centered in view. Instead, only move the camera until the end boards come into view, and refrain from panning in.
Talk to friends and local rinks. Many teams at the AAA level have a dedicated videographer for the coach, or at the very least have some type of automatic camera for LiveBarn or HockeyTV. Talk with other parents to see if anyone has interests running a camera each game, as it could be beneficial at the end of the season for all 18-22 players when the need for highlight videos arrives. If rinks record to HockeyTV, receiving video permission and even copies can be a simple ask. Youtube has become a key contributor recently, do a quick search for your team or opponents to see if any other teams or families have posted game footage.
When using an iPhone, remember to hold horizontally. Recording via phone held normally may be great for Tik Tok and Instagram reels, but is too narrow for highlight videos.
Get the most out of your videos. Parents and players record game after game, looking for highlights, but its important to remember this is a great learning tool as well. Review your game footage, and give an honest assessment of your game. Forwards and Defenseman, are you ever caught watching the play / feet not moving ? How well are you receiving and moving pucks ? How many turnovers per game ? Goaltenders, are you late recovering to next puck? How quick and controlled are you moving throughout your crease? Don’t just watch your game videos for highlights, watch them to find the areas of improvement in your game
