USA Wins Gold
The United States defeated Sweden in OT on Ryan Leanard’s goal early into the first overtime, after tying the game late in the 3rd. This gold medal game was the 3rd in the past 4 tournaments for the USA at the IIHF U18 World Championships, taking silver in 2022 and 2019.
The BC line, consisting of Boston College commits Ryan Leonard, Gabe Perreault and Will Smith led the tournament, with Smith finishing with the tournament lead of 20 points, and tied with 16 year old Cole Eiserman with 9 goals.
Canada would win bronze in a OT thriller vs Slovakia, with another 16 year old in Macklin Celebrini scoring the OT winner, his 2nd of the bronze medal game. The BU commit finished the tournament with 6 goals 9 assists in 15 games.
BCHL Leaves Hockey Canada
The BCHL, a large contributor to NCAA hockey, announced effective June 1st 2023, the league will become independent of Hockey Canada. The move will open the recruiting pool by recruiting U18 players from other areas in Canada, as well as the United States and Europe.
