World Juniors Cancelled
Junior Hockey
The IIHF announced Wednesday the remainder of the 2022 World Junior Championship, one of the top events for NHL scouts and prospective prospects, due to Covid concerns. The tournament, held in Edmonton and Red Deer, was not played within a bubble this year like it was last year, with reports stating teams were in hotels open to the public, one which included a large wedding party. The US team was the first to forfeit a game, after 2 players tested positive, followed by the Czechs.
Some takeaways from the limited games played:
Connor Bedard is good at hockey - the 16 year old tallied 4 goals in Canada’s last game vs Austria, with multiple “woah” moments that didn’t go in.
Askarov Struggles - The Nashville Predators 11th overall selection in 2020 came into the tournament ready to redeem himself after 2 average tournaments in 2021, and 2020. Askarov struggled in his first start against Sweden, getting yanked in the 2nd after allowing 3 goals on 16 shots and did not start vs Switzerland a day later. There is no question Askarov is a athletic freak with long arms and legs, and a powerful skater, but this has to be slightly alarming for Nashville.
Jesper Wallstedt Impressive Shutout - The Minnesota first round selection was impressive in his 2 starts, stopping 75 of 78 shots faced, including a 48 shutout performance against Slovakia. In most years, that wouldn’t be as impressive but, Slovakia brought arguably one of its best teams ever to the tournament, and created high quality chances. Wallstedt’s game is calm, but powerful coverage goaltender, and was the top goalie of the brief tournament.
