Scouting Notes
Trent Swick - ‘04 Forward Kitchener Rangers
The 6'6 power forward was a monster on Friday night accumulating a goal and two assists. A lot to handle in the net front, Swick does an unbelievable job of taking away the goaltender's eyes and rolling off-net front coverage to create space for himself. Not the sharpest skater on the ice he does get around the ice with relative ease and demonstrates patience with the puck on his stick. His goal was scored by identifying the loose puck off the goaltender's pad and finishing the puck with a soft touch into the back of the net.
Simon Motew - ‘03 Defensemen - Kitchener Rangers
Motew does not have any elite traits on the ice but you can tell he is a guy you need to have as a part of a winning program. The effort to get his team back into the game late in the third period is the type of effort you look for in your team leader. He showed the ability to get up and down the ice in transition and showed some power play ability. Early on he had a late return back to the net front coverage on the PK which caused his team to give up an easy one. For the most part, Motew is a simple, smart and highly competitive defenseman who gives an honest effort.
Hunter Brzustewicz - ‘04 Defensemen - Kitchener Rangers
NHL : Vancouver
Not on his A game, Brzustewicz was directly responsible for 2 goals against. One was a blind pass where he casually moved the puck in the net front resulting in a breakaway. The other was a rush where he over-handled the puck resulting in a turnover, that sparked a breakaway the other way. He is dynamic with the puck on his stick and to a fault hangs onto the puck way too long.
Carson Campbell - ‘06 Defensemen - Kitchener Rangers
A notable on the NHL Central Scouting list, Campbell struggled vs the aggressiveness of the SOO. On puck retrievals, he struggled to gather pucks off the wall cleanly and process his first pass read often resulting in a wrap or thrown puck. Struggling to defend east and west he was exposed by faster skaters. He did have a few nice rushes up the ice where he joined from the back end, resulting in a few chances.
Matthew Virgilio - ‘06 Defensemen - SOO Greyhounds
The young defensemen from the SOO plays a mature game. Offensively he picks his spots to get involved offensively including a beautiful play where he came screaming down the slot and demanded the puck then hit Sirizzotti for an easy tap in goal. Defensively he used his stick very well touching the puck and eliminating space. On regroups he used his feet to create separation and deception to create passing lanes. A notable on NHL Central Scouting Sirizzotti has the potential to climb up draft boards.
Jack Beck - ‘03 Forward - SOO Greyhounds
NHL - Calgary
Averaging over a point per game in his overage year, he has been the main reason for the success the SOO has been having this year. When the puck is on his stick, he is showing tremendous patience with the puck and play-making ability. The power play demonstrates how dangerous he can be threading passes into tight areas. Offensively his game is mature, but in the finer details of the game he needs to continue to grow. He struggled to play in crowded areas and struggled to get pucks off the wall on breakouts on more than one occasion.
Connor Clattenburg - ‘05 Forward - SOO Greyhounds
A depth forward for the SOO, Clattenburg plays to his identity. A 6'2 forward with above-average skating ability, Clattenburg was able to be a major contributor on the PK where he used his lateral skating to move into shooting lanes blocking three shots on the game. With the puck on his stick, he showed patience in waiting for passing lanes to open and then fed grade-A opportunities. Providing energy shift to shift Clattenburg is hard to play against and is a mainstay in the SOO line up.
