Sunday, November 12, 2023 - Potomac Patriots 5 vs Charlotte Rush 4
In a weekend match-up of two of our top Tier 3 power ranked teams, it was Potomac asserting themselves as the top dog in the Southeast division. Our take is that both teams are impressive in their own right with loads of NCAA talent and Tier 2 junior talent on the Potomac side. Charlotte is an older heavier team that plays with hard skill where Potomac is a high-flying offense that plays up and down the ice. Both teams are must watches for scouts and coaches around the country this year.
Below are our top performers from the weekend.
Matsvei Marshchanok - ‘05 Forward - Potomac Patriots
The 05' Forward has been one of the most impressive young players in the USPHL Premier division this year and is a must watch for Tier 2 scouts. Marshchanok carries a powerful stride with a wide base which makes him difficult to get knocked off the puck. On the power play he is a threat to score coming down the wall as he attacks down ice very quickly and has the ability to get his shot off in stride. While in the offensive zone he uses his edges to create space for himself which also allows him to maintain puck possession. He can also facilitate offense with his vision as he uses plenty of deception and touch on his pass to thread the needle.
Mauritz Persson - ‘03 Forward - Potomac Patriots
Contributing to his team's success was the 03' forward who netted a goal on Saturday night and added a helper on Sunday. Persson is in his second year with Potomac and is on pace to blow past his last year's point total of 42. We really liked his burst of speed and ability to change his speeds as he attacked defenders 1 on 1. His lone goal on the weekend came off a 2 on 1 where he demonstrated nice finishing ability on the puck. His transition game and zone entry puck decisions were impressive and really kept the Rush defenders off balanced.
William Olund - ‘03 Defensemen - Potomac Patriots
Olund played every situation for his club this weekend. Not the cleanest skater, Olund does get around the ice pretty well and has the ability to defend in tight areas. He does struggle at times to defend off the rush but we do believe his issues are caused by poor angles rather than skating ability. Olund displayed his offensive upside quite often as he worked the power play very well snapping his passes around. He had a few nice first pass reads out of the zone that sparked the transitional game for Potomac.
Siamion Marschchanok - ‘05 Forward - Potomac Patriots
Another young forward for Potomac and the brother of Matsvei, Siamion leads the league in points this year with 73 total points in 22 games. The point total alone should draw eyeballs of scouts and colleges, but he is visibly playing the game at a higher level than most in the USPHL Premier. On the weekend he contributed 8 points (3G 5A) and is riding an 8 game multi point scoring streak. A dynamic forward on the power play, Marschchanok showed off his power play vision and decision making by not forcing plays. When he had to shoot the puck, he displayed a quick release that packs a lot of deception to get the goal tender off his angle. Off the rush he was able to beat defenders to the edge and consistently distribute the puck while in motion with touch. The most impressive part of Siamion's game was his usage on the PK where he effectively killed off a 5 on 3 and his ability to win draws.
Gion Coray - ‘03 Forward - Potomac Patriots
Coray has tremendous puck skills and is a terrific support player in this Potomac line up. He brings a quick release to his game that has the ability to beat the goaltender clean. He works well away from the puck finding soft areas of the ice and works towards the mid slot area for secondary screens. He had a nice tip that completely redirected into the net demonstrating terrific hand eye coordination. Coray also showed off some backhand ability receiving and delivering pucks clean on his back hand. Despite his size he does play in the dirty areas of the ice and brings a nice level of compete to his game.
Jared Weisert - ‘03 Forward - Charlotte Rush
The 03' forward did his best to keep his team in both games as he scored 4 points on the weekend. Weisert displayed consistent puck movement and touch on his passes. The Rush trusted him to work the power play where he was often the point man to get things started for the Rush. In tight areas he used his big 6'3 frame to protect pucks and fight for his space on the ice. Weisert does have a tendency to not keep his feet engaged, if he consistently keeps his feet moving he will be a prospect that D3 schools will fall in love with.
Owen Cross - ‘04 Forward - Charlotte Rush
Scoring in back-to-back games was Cross who now has 4 total goals on the year. The 04' plays a smart game subtle game that is detailed. He consistently throws pucks on net, fights for inside positioning on 50/50 pucks and is a hard player to move in the net front. His foot speed, specifically his first three strides allow him to get up to speed quickly in the transition game. Cross is developing nicely and should have a good second half to his 19-year-old year.
Zach Nicholls - ‘03 Forward - Charlotte Rush
Nicholls has been a consistent player throughout his junior career and he has continued that during his 20-year-old. Coming into the weekend Nicholls was carrying 5 game point streak which extended to 7 games as he netted a goal on Saturday night and added an assist on Sunday. A nice forward, Nicholls can get up to speed fairly quickly through the neutral zone to spark the rush. Off the rush he displayed the ability to make plays happen with good puck decisions.
Wilder Outman - ‘03 Defensemen - Charlotte Rush
A 6'2 mobile defensemen there is a lot to like about Outman's game. Defensively he played sound in his position and his skating ability allowed him to defend the rush with a tight gap. On the offensive blue line, he displayed a quick first step that allowed him shrink on the half wall often disrupting the breakout and trapping Potomac in the defensive zone. With the puck on his stick, he regularly got his shots through and was able to make smart decisions quickly and efficiently. There is a lot to like about the 03 and his long term potential on a college roster.
Rocco Stolz - ‘04 Goaltender - Charlotte Rush
Stolz was not as sharp as he typically is in this match up vs the high-powered offense of Potomac Patriots. He turned away 39 of 44 shots and gave his team a chance to win late in the game. He is an athletic goaltender who competes on every shot that he sees however he did put himself in poor secondary save positions, resulting in a few too many desperation saves. When his feet are calm and set in the goal crease, he plays a much more controlled game in net.
