Weekend Report - NAHL Janesville Jets vs Minnesota Magicians
4.9.21 - 4.10.21
Game 1
Janesville 2 Minnesota 1 OT
A defensive battle to start the weekend as we had a scoreless game through one period, both goalies combining to stop 20 shots apiece. Moving into the second period the teams both got on the scoreboard with Janesville stating it off with a nice breakout into a two-on-two rush where they buried on a nice shot through traffic. The third period was much of the same in comparison to the first as we would head to overtime tied 1-1. In a back-and-forth overtime we ended up with a highlight reel goal off the stick of Charlie Schoen with a nice between the legs dangle on a breakaway in OT to give Janesville the two points.
Game 2
Janesville 6 Minnesota 0
Moving into Saturday night we had another fairly slow start offensively as we did not see out first goal until under a minute left in the 1st period. Janesville would find the back of the net off a nice zone entry rush with some slick passing in the offensive zone. This would prove to be the only goal Janesville needed as goaltender Riley Sims would complete the weekend with a 6-0 shutout win for his team as they completed the weekend sweep over the Magicians.
Scouting Notes
Blake Dangos - ‘02 Defenseman - Janesville Jets
Commit : St Lawrence
Smooth skating defenseman who couples his skating with his good vision. He utilized this vision on an assist Saturday night. Although he does a lot of good things on the offensive end, he is a defenseman and his habits on the backend such as his capability to touch pucks and be patient are attributes that are only going to help him build his game at the next levels.
Nick Leyer - ‘00 Forward - Janesville Jets
Commit : N/A
Leyer has been very good for the Jets since joining them later in the year from the AJHL. He constantly plays with his head up ice and has his hands and feet moving in unison with each other more often than not. A good nose for the net has him at almost a point of game since coming to the NAHL, Leyer could be a good steal for a school at the next level as he also carries a high hockey IQ and plays smart all over the ice.
Cade DeStefani - ‘01 Forward - Janesville Jets
Commit : Western Michigan
The Western Michigan Commit has had a lot of success for the Jets this year and it starts with his elite shot and ability to find the back of the net. Cade has a very quick release and makes it incredibly difficult for goalies to get a read on his shot. He also adds in the capability to be a speedy skater with a clean stride that makes him tough to take off the puck when he gains a full head of steam.
Riley Sims - ‘00 Goaltender - Janesville Jets
Commit : N/A
Still looking for a home next year, Riley has certainly done his job to garner attention from teams looking for a goaltender. Sims’ rebound control was paramount throughout the weekend and helped him control both games while only giving up one goal on the weekend.
Charlie Schoen - ‘01 Forward - Janesville Jets
Commit : Arizona State
Schoen gave us the highlight of the weekend as he showed how skilled he is and being able to add it to his speed makes him a threat all over the ice. He has got a very smart hockey mind as well which he uses to support pucks the correct way and always find himself in a position to attack and be a threat.
Gavin Best - ‘01 Forward - Minnesota Magicians
Commit : N/A
Best had a good weekend in which he showed a great capability to be strong on his feet and show his good skating ability. Gavin does a really good job of using his body position to protect pucks, this makes him very difficult to take off pucks throughout the game. A strong skill that goes very underrated at times.
Andy Beran - ‘00 Goaltender - Minnesota Magicians
Commit : N/A
Another uncommitted goaltender doing all he can to find the right fit for next year. Beran shows a great ability to move side to side balanced and not out of position. He has great control of his hands which help in this aspect and he never really finds himself off balance unless in a desperate situation.
Brett Oberle - ‘01 Defenseman - Minnesota Magicians
Commit : Minnesota-Duluth
As a defenseman, he has a very good offensive mind for the game. Brett shows a great skill to join in the offense at times without getting over extended as a defenseman. Constantly putting pucks to the net and creating chances for his team, his hockey IQ shows off quite a bit when he joins at the right times.
Luc Layin - ‘01 Forward - Minnesota Magicians
Commit : N/A
Layin starts his great play with how good he can be in the faceoff dot. He seemed to dominate draws at times this weekend and always helping his team gain possession. Playing in all situations for the Magicians, Luc shows his versatility throughout the game to be effective everywhere. Very good poise with the puck allows for his mind to take over and move pucks to the right areas and then supporting them correctly afterwards.
