Weekend Report - NAHL Shreveport Mudbugs vs Odessa Jackalopes
4.9.21 - 4.10.21
Game 1
Shreveport 4 Odessa 2
Shreveport and Odessa opened up the weekend with a little back and forth contest that saw both teams trade goals until Shreveport was able to pull ahead for good at 3-2. Odessa opened the scoring off a very nice entry rush on the PP, while Shreveport answered on a play made by captain and newly committed David Breazeale, who ended up with the primary assist on the play.
Trading goals again led to a 2-2 where Shreveport would pull ahead 3-2 on a good offensive zone possession leading to a shot from the tops of the circle. Shreveport ended it with an empty netter to cap a 4-2 win on night one.
Game 2
Shreveport 8 Odessa 2
Heading into night 2, Shreveport had a chance to take a weekend sweep from Odessa. We found ourselves in another back and forth matchup with a lot more goals. At about the halfway mark of the game Odessa had just tied it up 4-4 in this high scoring affair.
Shreveport then took over from there finding 2 more before the end of the 2nd period to get us to 6-4 heading into the third and they never looked back as they added 2 more to win the game by a final of 8-4 and they finished off the weekend sweep of Odessa.
Scouting Notes
David Breazeale - ‘00 Defenseman - Shreveport Mudbugs
Commit : Lindenwood
Breazeale made the nice play on Shreveport’s first goal of the weekend as he used good skating to move through the neutral zone and garner attention before putting a puck to the net. Breazeale makes his game on the backend though as he is very good with his habits such as touching pucks and finding himself in shooting lanes. A very steady and positionally sound defenseman.
Matt Vermaeten - ‘01 Forward - Shreveport Mudbugs
Commit : Canisius
Vermaeten had a big weekend for the Mudbugs, tallying 4 goals and 1 assist on the weekend. Matt has an uncanny nose for the net as he scored all of his goals in different types of ways this weekend. Using smart net drive, good backchecking battle and a good shot he was able to expose Odessa goaltending all weekend. Also good in the faceoff dot, Matt has an overall level of compete to his game that is fun to watch.
Arseniy Sergeev - ‘02 Goaltender - Shreveport Mudbugs
Commit : N/A
Sergeev is a very powerful and long goaltender. He moves very well and with a purpose, very good hand projection throughout. Arseniy had a great night for Shreveport on Friday night and has been very consistent for the Mudbugs all year. He has great skating ability in such tight areas and catches his edges very well, as he continues to develop into a very good goalie down in the South.
Joe Mack - ‘00 Forward - Shreveport Mudbugs
Commit : N/A (OHL)
Mack also found himself on the scoresheet a lot this weekend as he tallied 4 points (2g and 2a). Joe has a very quick and accurate shot when he gets it off. He caught Odessa goalie Cooper Black on the short side because of how quick his release is, he supports pucks the right way in all three zones as well to put himself in good position to be a danger all over the ice.
Charlie Banquier - ‘02 Defenseman - Odessa Jackalopes
Commit : N/A
Charlie is nothing flashy as a defenseman but plays the position very well and also finds ways to get pucks to the net. He did a great job of that this weekend. While also playing with a little bit of an edge, Charlie does a good job on the backend of limiting chances and using his size to be effective in the defensive zone. Constantly playing with his head up to play positionally very well.
Tyler German - ‘00 Forward - Odessa Jackalopes
Commit : N/A
German was able to find the back of the net this weekend on a nice power play goal off good tight support to the puck. One of the best things about Tyler’s game is how he moves pucks with a purpose and finds open teammates consistently because he tries not to find himself in a position to have to just throw pucks all over the ice.
Fletcher Anderson - ‘00 Forward - Odessa Jackalopes
Commit : N/A
The former CCHL-er found the scoresheet twice this weekend. He had a nice goal off a quick release as the middle option on the power play for Odessa. Anderson plays with a ton of energy and is almost the barometer for his team, Fletcher does a good job finishing hits all while trying to constantly set the tone for Odessa throughout the game.
