Cape Cod Whalers Showcase Report
Here are some of the top performers and teams from the Cape Cod Whalers Showcase, October 16th through October 18th in Canton, MA
Top Team - Cape Cod Whalers
Cape Cod took care of business this weekend defeating their two opponents, the East Coast Wizards 9-1 and the Boston Jr Eagles 5-1. This team was able to execute high level plays offensively as they moved pucks at an elite level which created tons of problems for their opponents. As a result of their depth Cape Cod is likely to see several players taken in the USHL Phase 1 draft and QMJHL American drafts.
Top Performers
Jim Lyver - Cape Cod - Forward 5’11 175 lbs
Lyver is a strong two-way player who seems to always be in the right spot. He takes good routes to pucks, back checks with a purpose, was extremely effective on the PK and showed the ability to create in the offensive zone. He utilized nice area passes, one of which sparked a nice 2 on 1. His skating will need to continue to improve but he has a lot of upside to his game.
Owen Leahy - Cape Cod - Forward 5’7 145 lbs
The speedy forward was able to create a lot of plays at high levels of speed. He was able to beat the defenders to the edge on 1v1 rushes and showed a nice goal scorer’s touch. Leahy was an extremely confident passer as he was able to pass through the defenders stick instead of around the defender. He’s a player that wants the puck on his stick, but at times he overhandles and needs to look to distribute quicker.
Griffin Crain - Cape Cod - Defensemen 5’7 145 lbs
Crain is a smart subtle defender who is effective in several different ways. Here he was able to move pucks at a high level as he processes his first pass very quickly even under pressure. He has the ability to rush pucks but prefers to move them and then jump to an open area to become an option. Griffin also has strong skating ability as well as nice edges which makes him hard to be knocked off pucks.
Matt Egan - EC Wizards - Forward 5’11 163 lbs
Egan was able to generate several chances for his Wizards team by simply using his speed. He beat defenders to the edge on multiple occasions which resulted in high percentage scoring chances. He is not afraid to get to the net and play in the dangerous areas of the ice. Egan will need to continue to develop away from the puck, along with learning to create offense outside of just using his speed to do so.
Stephen Kilcoyne - EC Wizards - Defense 6’0 185lbs
Kilcoyne is a strong two defensemen who looks like an intriguing prospect. With his size and skating ability, he is able to cover a lot of area. He was properly positioned in corner battles and showed nice wall play as he was able to fight for loose pucks. His quick release from the offensive blue line was effective as it found its way towards the net. If Kilcoyne plays with a little bit more grit to his game in the defensive zone he can blossom into a good prospect.
Matt Cox - Boston Jr. Eagles - Defense 6’3 195 lbs
With his size alone, Cox is an intriguing prospect for scouts, but if you combine it with his skating ability you have the potential of a big-time prospect for junior programs. He was able to walk the offensive blue line with ease and showed a nice accurate shot. Like most big guys his age, he struggled to defend in tight and play in tight areas, both of which will improve with time.
Top Team - Boston Jr Bruins
The U16 division was extremely competitive as most of the teams tied each other throughout the weekend. The Jr. Bruins were able to get a win against the Little Bruins 2-1 and had a hard-fought 1-1 tie against the Boston Jr. Eagles. This Jr Bruins squad featured a good combination of birth years as they had players ranging from 04-06. What makes many of these prospects intriguing for scouts is the size of the younger guys and their ability to play the game at high levels of speed.
Top Performers
Matthew Biotti - East Coast Wizards - Defense 6’4 187 lbs
Biotti is a big, rangy defenseman who covers a lot of area. His long stick makes it hard for his opponents to generate much offense, and his ability to defend east and west was extremely impressive for a bigger guy. Offensively Biotti also showed good instincts. He has the ability to move pucks effectively on the power play where he is confident in his decision making and he also had a nice goal where he came down the high slot and wired a loose puck into the back of the net.
James Fisher - East Coast Wizards - Forward 6’2 175 lbs
The athletic forward was extremely effective here. He was playing a hard-honest game as he competed for every loose puck. Offensively he showed off a quick release in the middle bump position, as he was able to get shots off in tight areas. His ability to create offense below the goal line was on full display as he set up several chances. His one hiccup was he blew the zone too early which resulted in a goal against.
Ben McGilvray - Boston Jr. Bruins - Forward, 6’2 180 lbs
The 05’ birth year was playing u16 this showcase, and he looked like he belonged here. He’s a raw talent but has tons of pieces to work with for long term projections. His straight-line speed is there as he won several foot races and made life difficult for opposing defenders on the forecheck. He has a nose for the puck as he won several corner and wall battles. He will however need to continue to develop his puck skills as he was a little choppy with the puck on his stick.
Owen Keefe - Boston Jr. Bruins - Defense 5’10 165 lbs
The 06 was playing two years up here at the showcase. As expected, he was very up and down, but his ups were very high. He is extremely smart with the puck on his stick in the offensive zone as he shoots for tips and picks his head up to find the shooting lanes on a regular basis. His skating is very strong as he can get to anywhere on the ice. He had one very bad step that sparked a 2 on 1 opportunity, but as he matures, he will make smarter plays away from the puck.
Shane Baker - Boston Jr Bruins - Forward, 5’11 180 lbs
The Omaha Lancers and Moncton Wildcats draft pick in the 2020 drafts was extremely effective here this weekend. His shiftiness allows him to create his own scoring opportunity as he generates a lot of space for himself. On the power play he is a constant threat as a goal scorer and as a facilitator. At times he tries to do too much and puck receiving can be a challenge as they can go under his stick. Overall, he is a nice college prospect this year for D1 coaches to take a look at.
Tyler Bloomfield - Boston Jr Bruins - Goaltender, 5’11 170 lbs
The 05’ goaltender was extremely impressive here. He plays big as he always arrives to the puck squared and at proper depth. His patience allows him to look calm in net as he rarely over committed to any one play. He shows strong down low coverage and his hands reacted well to pucks. He made a big time 2 on 1 save with the game on the line. Without a doubt, he’s an intriguing goaltender to keep eyes on this year.
Top Team - Boston Jr Eagles
The Eagles were very dominate on Saturday night vs the South Shore Kings Prep team, defeating them by the score of 8-2. Then they followed up that performance with a solid 4-1 victory over a very solid Cape Cod Whalers teams. The Jr. Eagles feature a very deep blue line that produces on both sides of the ice. Up front they are a competitive group that has the ability to find scoring on every line, and their uncommitted players should start gain NCAA D1 attention during the prep season.
Top Performers
Brendan Dumas - Cape Cod Whalers - Forward 5’10 180 lbs
Brendan had a very effective weekend and is becoming one of the more consistent forwards in New England Midget 18 hockey. He is shooter who loves to fire the puck from anywhere, and his teammates continue to feed him pucks because he does a nice job of making himself a very viable option in the offensive zone.
Timmy Delay - Boston Jr Eagles - Forward 6’1 170 lbs
The Boston College commit was flying around this weekend as his speed was on full display. His size, speed and hands made it seem like the puck was glued to his stick all weekend. He was consistently strong in all three zones and back checked with a purpose. Overall, a very effective weekend for the BC commit.
Nick Roukounakis- Boston Jr Eagles - Forward 6’3 220 lbs
The big, power-forward that is committed to Boston University was extremely difficult to play against this weekend. His compete away from the puck was top notch as he constantly back checks with a purpose and to the right spot. His PK ability was very impressive for his size as he showed tremendous mobility and the ability to recover quickly. His offense came off the rush, but there is room for him to grow in the puck possession game below the dots in the offensive zone.
Joe Freeman - South Shore Kings Prep - Defense 5’10 165 lbs
The smooth skating defensemen was able to show off both his offensive and defensive ability throughout the weekend. His first step allows him to recover defensively from all over the ice and his lateral movement allows him to walk the offensive blue line. He was very smart defensively as he defended several odd-man-rushes properly. His first pass out of the zone was extremely effective and he wasted no time getting up into the play.
Drew Haxton - South Shore Kings Prep - Forward 5’9 165LBS
Drew was able to generate offensive chances by using his playmaking ability. He set up several high percentage scoring chances, especially down along the goal line. His first step allows him to get up to speed extremely fast making him a threat in the transition game. He does however need to learn how to keep his feet moving while trying to make plays, because at times he becomes very predictable.
