2024 NHL Draft Preview
An early look at some of the most exciting prospects in the 2024 draft class
Macklin Celebrini - ‘06 Forward - Chicago Steel (USHL)
Commit : Boston University
The USHL’s scoring leader this season was Macklin Celebrini, a 2006-born forward from Vancouver who also happened to miss 12 games for international tournaments. Since the USHL became a Junior league in 1979, no 16-year-old has ever scored as many points as Celebrini’s 86. In fact, no one else has even hit 70. Only Jack Hughes has a better per-game scoring rate in the league’s history. Celebrini is an offensive dynamo with elite speed, hands, and an outrageous finishing touch around the net. Macklin has accelerated his studies and is committed to Boston University for the 2023-24 season, but the WHL’s Seattle Thunderbirds also selected him 1st overall in the WHL American draft (he is Canadian, but currently lives in California). Wherever he ends up he will surely be one of the most electrifying players in amateur hockey next year.
Ivan Demidov - ‘05 Forward - SKA-1946 St. Petersburg (MHL)
If you’re hoping Matvei Michkov’s “baggage” helps him slide in the draft to your favorite team, get ready to do it all over again next year with Ivan Demidov. While Demidov is not quite at the same level as Michkov, he’s a player who would be talked about in the same breath as Celebrini if his passport had a different country on it. Ivan finished the MHL season with 64 points in 44 games, good for 3rd most in the league and 4th best points per game rate. He’s an outstanding skater who pushes the pace whenever he has the puck. His hands and ability to make a play in tight spaces are elite, and he likes to take the puck hard to the net. He’s more of a playmaker than a goal scorer, but he can finish his chances and will be able to score as he moves up in levels. Demidov is slated to play for SKA’s KHL team, but if Michkov couldn’t crack the lineup in his draft year it’s safe to assume Demidov will either end up in the VHL (Russia’s 2nd pro tier) or on loan at a weaker KHL club.
Cole Eiserman - ‘06 Forward - USNTDP
The Eisermans are a hockey family. Cole’s father Bill played college hockey at UMass Lowell, his older brother Shane was drafted by the Ottawa Senators and played minor pro, and he has two other brothers who played NCAA hockey as well. Cole looks poised to take the family name to the next level. Eiserman is, bar none, the best pure goal scorer in this draft class. He scored 43 goals in 42 games with the U17 National Team, and when he was called up to the U18 team he followed it up with 26 goals in 20. He led the U17 Challenge and the World U18s in goals with 12 and 8 respectively. His release is outstanding–he can find a puck in traffic and whip it on net with power and accuracy or unleash his one-time howitzer when he finds himself in space. He can drive the play himself or find soft spots in the zone and bury passes with authority. Eiserman will surely be the focus of most eyes at the NTDP this coming season, and should see himself in the early part of the 2024 draft.
Konsta Helenius - ‘06 Forward - Jukurit (Liiga)
In the last 45 years, only three 16-year-olds have scored 10 or more points in a Liiga season: Aleksander Barkov, Jesse Puljujärvi, and now Konsta Helenius. Konsta began the season with Tappara’s U20 team and had an unbelievable start, scoring 28 points in his first 19 games before leaving for the U17 Challenge in Canada. With Tappara’s senior team dominating Liiga (they finished as champions), Helenius secured a loan to Jukurit in November and never looked back. Konsta is a smaller, shifty, creative playmaking winger who is adept at baiting defenders into making mistakes before carving them up with his passing. He’s an explosive skater with an extra gear to blow by defenders and take the puck coast to coast. He is smart and scrappy, and has no issue taking contact from bigger and older players.
