Game 3 : Wednesday 4.26.23 @ Northeast Generals
Maryland has dominated Northeast in both games. Despite an overtime victory in game 2, Maryland controlled the play for majority of the game outshooting Northeast 62-22. The Black Bear depth is proving too much for the Northeast Generals as the Generals will look to defend home ice in game 3 on Wednesday night. Brad McNeil is tied for the playoff lead in points, with 3G 2A in 2 games.
Top Performers
Branden Piku - ‘02 Forward - Maryland Black Bears
Commit : Lake Superior State
Piku was a big-time performer for Maryland over the weekend both on the scoresheet and away from the puck. He played a mature game that is very hard to match-up against as he played with a ton of energy. In game 1 he provided his team with three assists and in game 2 he scored a timely goal that helped stop the Northeast Generals momentum.
Christian Catalano - ‘03 Forward - Maryland Black Bears
Commit : RIT
Catalano has been a consistent driver of offense for Maryland all season. His speed makes him hard to contain specifically in the transition game. He has shown time and time again that he has tremendous offensive instincts and can either score the puck himself or distribute the puck to his teammates. Northeast is having a hard time trying to find an answer for his offensive play.
Sean Kilcullen - ‘02 Defenseman - Maryland Black Bears
Commit : UMass Lowell
With 170 games played in the NAHL, Kilcullen is one of the most experienced players in the league. He plays an effective consistent game that his team can rely upon every shift, period and game. His play making ability from the backend was on full display throughout the weekend. His ability to find shooting lanes is impressive and a big part of the Maryland puck possession game.
#2 New Jersey Titans vs #3 Maine Nordiques
Series : Maine Leads 2-0
Results
Game 1 : Maine (3) vs New Jersey (0)
Game 2 : Maine (6) vs New Jersey (5) OT
Next Game
Game 3 : Thursday 4.26.23 @ Maine Nordiques
The Nordiques have the defending Robertson Cup Champions on the ropes through the first two games of the series. Maine has shown the ability to counter everything the New Jersey Titans have thrown at them by winning two games in two different ways. For both teams the 20-year-olds have stepped up playing huge roles for their teams. If New Jersey is to mount a come back they will need to tighten up on the backend as they have struggled with Maine's transitional game.
Top Performers
Brendan Gibbons - ‘02 Forward - Maine Nordiques
Commit : Air Force
Accumulating 4 points (2g 2A) through the first two games, the Air Force commit has proven to be a handful for the Titan defensive core. Gibbons has used his frame to his advantage playing in tight areas protecting pucks. His foot speed, which has been a question looks to have taken a step in the right direction as he is playing the game with a ton of pace.
Patrick Schimedlin - ‘02 Forward - Maine Nordiques
Commit : Lindenwood
Schmiedlin's skating and ability to change directions has posed a problem for the Titans. Through the neutral zone he is creating successful zone entries that lead to puck possession or high percentage scoring chances. With the puck on his stick he is demonstrating poise along with the ability to make the right decision.
Evan Orloff - ‘03 Defenseman - Maine Nordiques
Orloff has proven to be a reliable junior defender as he has drastically improved on the defensive side of the puck and he can provide offense from the blue line. He had a beautiful short side power play goal in game 1 of the series that beat Titan goaltender Zachary Brice short side, coming down from his point. At 6'3 and a smooth skater, there is a lot to like about his game.
Anthony Calafiore - ‘02 Forward - New Jersey Titans
Commit : Maine
Playing top line minutes, the New Jersey Captain has done his best to get his team going in the right direction. Despite being undersized he uses his shiftiness and strong lower body to his advantage to protect pucks. With the support of his linemates he can dominate the puck possession game. He had himself a productive weekend with a goal and assist, but his ability to generate chances was the highlight of his play.
