Scouting Notes
#16 Ryan McKenna - ‘03 Forward - Sheridan Hawks
The right handed McKenna was quiet on the scoresheet with just 2 assists over the 2 games, but showed he can do more than get to spots and shoot. At 5’11”, McKenna has a solid frame, with average pace but the positional awareness to get into right spots to continue plays or create chances. Made key plays in the neutral zone when needed, creating a 2 on 1 with smart positioning capped off with a deceptive pass for the assist. A top 5 producer in the NA3.
#25 McCaffrey Billings - ‘03 Defenseman - Sheridan Hawks
An athletic, balanced skater, Billings’ instincts on both sides of the puck should be picking up NCAA and ACHA coach’s attention, playing in his 4th season in the NA3HL. Attacked off his offensive blue line with deceptive body fakes to create space off blue line walks, dangerous with puck on stick. The 6’3” lefty has already put up 28 points in 30 games thus far, close to his 21-22 totals of 32 points in 47 games.
#4 Wyatt Noble - ‘02 Defenseman - Sheridan Hawks
Commit : Post University
A fluid skating lefty, Noble covered ice with ease throughout the 2 games. Just 1 assist but showed instincts when to jump or cover defensively, the 6’1” Minnesota native’s skating ability sets him up for success defensively, as well as in transition situations. Noble was quick thinking and balanced on his feet with puck on his stick, facilitating breakouts by taking ice and constantly scanning for options.
#23 Parker Norling - ‘02 Forward - Sheridan Hawks
Norling was pivotal in game 2, finding the back of the net twice, including the OT game winner, finishing the 2 game series with 2G 1A. The balanced lefty is not overpowering at 5’10”, but has the strength on skates, along with IQ to get to danger spots for chances. Scored driving back door on a 2 on 1, while scoring in OT getting to middle with simple 1 on 1 hands before getting low shot off. A high work rate player with offensive instincts.
#18 Danny Sheldon - ‘05 Forward - Sheridan Hawks
Sheldon has the mix of grit and offensive ability, finishing the weekend series with 2G 2A. The slightly undersized lefty is quick to react and win races, with pace away from the puck to crash the crease with force and bring defenders with him. As an ‘05, Sheldon has the tenacity and smarts to get to the dirty areas, and win stick/body positional battles to create, scoring both goals in and around the goal crease.
#22 Nathan Awoyemi - ‘02 Forward - Sheridan Hawks
Already surpassing his point total from last season in about half the games, Awoyemi was a top producer over the series, tallying 3G 2A. With big steps, Awoyemi covers ice well and works through checks to be effective in and around the net. Scored all 3 goals net front, finding rebounds and a nose for the net on the powerplay with the puck on his stick.
#1 Thomas Mellenthin - ‘04 Goaltender - Sheridan Hawks
The Colorado native made his 8th appearance of the season stopping 45 of 50 shots in the OT loss on 1/6. Mellenthin is very quick to regain feet, and aggressive crease positioning to cut down angles. This at times causes some gaps / uncontrolled recoveries, but Mellenthin has the compete, along with reading ability to never be out of a play. Not the largest goaltender at 5’10”, but a younger tier III goaltender to watch this season and next.
#7 Nick Cofer - ‘02 Forward - Yellowstone Quake
Cofer was the hero on 1/6, scoring late to tie the game before winning it in OT. The lefty is extremely smart away from the puck, and uses his body in smart ways at pace. The Minnesota native has silky hands and the offensive IQ to attack back door or win body positioning early, but also the want to take pucks to the net, not afraid to take the hit to get a shot off. Playing in his 3rd NA3HL season, and already at career highs for points and goals, Cofer’s small offensive details should catch a few college coach’s eyes.
#8 Brayson Bennett - ‘04 Forward - Yellowstone Quake
Bennet used his frame and strength on stick, along with offensive instincts positionally to create throughout the 2 games. The 5’11” righty was quick to jump driving back door for goal in 2d game, and was a creative passer setting up goals in game 1.
#5 Blake Mitchell - ‘04 Forward - Yellowstone Quake
Mitchell as a well rounded game, smart on both sides of the puck with a supportive nature. Has the agile skating ability + compete to constantly engage or create with quick puck decisions. Finished the 2 games with 1G 2A on 1/6, with very quick puck decisions, especially transitioning plays from defense to offense, or continuing cycles / offensive pressure.
Edvin Falkenstrom - ‘02 Goaltender - Yellowstone Quake
Falkenstrom plays a very technical game, and has the size at 6’3” with long legs and arms. Started 1/7, stopping 46 of 50 shots. The Swedish native does a great job with keeping himself square and controlled, especially head/hands. His recovery and composure in rebounds could be improved, but has the frame and technique.
