U-17 Super Stars In The Making
James Hagens and Cole Eiserman, the pair of 06' forwards for Team USA have come into the World U17 Hockey Challenge and have flipped the tournament upside down. Hagens leads the tournament with 6 goals and 10 assists, followed by Eiserman with 9 goals and 5 assists. Their production has them in the same category as NHL super starts Alex Ovechkin and Jack Hughes who scored relatively the same at this same event.
2007 Canadian Forward Michael Misa, despite his age for this tournament has showed why he was given the opportunity to enter the OHL a year early. His production through 5 games (3G 2 A) and overall maturity in his game have been on full display.
The tournament concludes its preliminary play tonight, with Finland, Canada Red, Sweden and Canada black all having a chance to jump into 2nd place with certain scenarios tonight. Team USA has locked their place in the gold medal game, going a perfect 6-0 in the preliminary round.
All Eyes on the Big 10
With 6 of the 7 programs in the Big 10 Conference being top 25 in the Pairwise rankings, the Big 10 is making it's case as the toughest Conference in all of College Hockey. The weekend of Big 10 hockey has already begun as both Penn State (4-2 win over Minnesota) and Michigan State (4-2 win over Ohio State) on Thursday Night.
Team by Team
Penn State - 10-1-0 - The big chatter at the beginning of the year was their schedule was weak. An out right win vs at the time #1 Michigan and an overtime loss silenced a lot of critics last weekend. Thursday night they took down another #1 in Minnesota 4-2, and will look for the sweep Friday night. Safe to assume the Nittany Lions are for real.
Minnesota - 7-4-0 - A tough schedule no doubt, but the Minnesota hype train has been a bit premature. They sit 3-2 in Big 10 conference play and played a close game with Penn State. They need to win on Friday night or their fan base needs to adjust the Gopher expectations this season.
Notre Dame - 4-4-2 - Speaking of overrated, Notre Dame has yet to really have a break through weekend. Yes, mid October wins over Northern Michigan and Western Michigan are solid but do they outweigh the 1-2-1 start in Big 10 play? Home games vs Michigan this weekend, Notre Dame has to show well.
Michigan State - 7-3-1 - Coach Adam Nightingale has done a tremendous job in the Michigan State rebuild. He has added some very key pieces to make this team not just competitive but a real threat in the Big 10 race. Graduate transfer goaltender Dylan St. Cyr has given them a chance to win every night with a 93.8 save percentage this season
Michigan - 8-2-0 - Cruising right along are the Wolverines, they are in the midst of three straight travel weekends to hostile environments. Every night the Wolverines get their opponents best effort, they should see the best of Notre Dame this weekend. Pound for Pound they are the best team in the conference.
Wisconsin - 2-8-0 - Coach Tony Granato's seat is getting very warm these days. Especially after getting embarrassed by Michigan State, a team that has shown you can rebuild very quickly. Wisconsin needs to look good vs LIU and Lindenwood the next few weeks before getting back into Big 10 play.
Ohio State - 7-3-1 - The Buckeyes have struggled to step up in competition. 6 of their 7 wins have been against bottom 20 Pairwise ranked teams, with the exception of 1 win vs Minnesota. Not great from the Buckeyes.
