Beniers, Powers Taking Next Step
Division I
For all picks going the college route, it is all about developing. Both Owen Powers, 2021 1st Overall pick of the Sabres, and Matty Beniers, 2021 2nd Overall pick to the Kraken, have done just that. Starting with Beniers, Matty totaled 10 goals and 14 assists in 24 games for his freshman campaign last season, and with 12 games played this season, he is already at 9 goals and 4 assists. Most impressive is his most recent from. In the last 4 games since the Wisconsin loss on October 29th, Beniers has 7 goals and 3 assists, with a 4 goal weekend vs rival Michigan State, followed by a 3 goal, 3 assist series at Penn State.
The story isn’t much different for Powers. Last season, the 6’5” left hander finished with 16 points in 26 games, tallying just 3 goals. In 12 games thus far, Powers has surpassed his totals in both goals and assists, with 3 goals and 15 assists. This is just 2 of the many NHL prospects flourishing with Michigan this season. Luke Hughes, 2021 first overall to New Jersey, is over a point per game as a freshman. Johnny Beecher, 2019 30th Overall to Boston, has 4 points in his first 4 games this season, Kent Johnson, 2021 5th Overall to Columbus, is on pace to almost double his points from a year ago, just to name a few. Not a shocker why Michigan is back to #1
Noemi Martinez Signs With Protec
EHL
The Protec Ducks of the Eastern Hockey League announced Friday they have signed Noemi Martinez, the first female to sign and be rostered in EHL history. Congratulations to Noemi and her family !
Omaha Fiasco
USHL
The players of the Omaha Lancers have walked out on team ownership in response to budget cuts, and firing of head coach Chadd Cassidy. The Lancers, currently 8-4-2 thus far, and have had their next 3 games postponed as the USHL intervenes. Reported by the Omaha World-Herald, the ownership group led by David DeLuca had cut the hockey operations budget for equipment, as well as team meals and video software. Ownership also allegedly tried to have an injured player coach, as well as having a billet parent act as an unpaid equipment manager.
Showcase Weekend
Midget & Junior Hockey
There are multiple tournaments coaches and scouts should keep an eye on this weekend, at both the junior and midget hockey level. The USPHL’s IHC Showcase began Thursday hosted by Islanders Hockey Club, and will feature teams from across the midwest and northeast at the NCDC, Premier and Elite Levels. In midget hockey, the NAPHL and NE Pack both have tournaments this weekend at the U18, U16 and U15 levels.
Utica Comets
AHL
The New Jersey Devils AHL affiliate has broken the AHL record for longest winging streak to start the season, with an incredible 12-0 start. Joe Gambardella, a New York native with ties to New Jersey midget and junior hockey, leads the Comets with 6 goals in 11 games. Along with steady goal scoring, the Comets have found a dynamic 1-2 punch in net with Akira Schmid and Nico Daws, both posting save % north of 92%. Most importantly, the Comets are continuing their success while losing players to call ups to the big club in New Jersey. Nico Daws, Alexander Holtz, Fabian Zetterlund, Tyce Thompson and Jesper Boqvist have all had stints with the Devils thus far.

QMJHL
