South Shore Kings (4) vs Boston Junior Bruins (2)
1.18.23
A mid-day matinee on a Wednesday between the South Shore Kings and Boston Junior Bruins yielded a quick and fast paced first period where South Shore held most of the high leverage scoring chances including some very impressive offensive zone time which allowed them to take a 1-0 lead heading into the second period.
The second period came with a lot of penalty time through the first 10 min as both teams had chances on the 5on3, both PK units did a great job by not allowing a ton of possession time with their PP units. 5 on 5 led to some even hockey throughout the period where both teams capitalized on some chances with South Shore getting the better of the Bruins 2-1 in the period and allowing them to hold a 3-1 lead heading into the 3rd.
The 3rd period was a well-played period by both teams as you saw the Bruins push a little bit early before South Shore was able to find the back of the net off a rush by Nate Stachowiak, who was able to get 3 whacks at a puck before depositing it into the far side of the net to push the lead to 4-1. The Bruins would tack on a goal late in the period but to no avail as South Shore would take the matinee 4-2.
Standout Players
Jack Meloff - ‘02 Defenseman - Boston Jr Bruins
Jack does a good job of getting pucks through to the net as he adds some decent deception to shots to keep pucks away from oncoming shot blockers. He shows his overall junior experience on his retrievals as he does a good job head checking to scan the ice for oncoming forecheckers, off that he is simple and hard with pucks. He did a great job of holding gaps early in the game as it was difficult to gain the offensive blue line against him.
Joey McGraw - ‘05 Forward - Boston Jr Bruins
McGraw has some extremely raw talent as you can see, he has pieces to be a good hockey player. He showcases that with his speed and quick release on his shot. He needs to learn to play with some structure in his game to become effective consistently at the junior level, a raw talent with tons of upside, McGraw is going to be a fun player to coach as he goes through the junior ranks.
Shane Baker - ‘04 Forward - Boston Jr Bruins
Baker is an impressive with his offensive IQ and awareness, which allowed for him to have some big chances in the game for BJB. He does a great job on his initial reloads defensively but sometimes lets up on his backcheck as play come through the neutral zone and into the defensive zone. His angling on the FC could use some work as well but overall, it was an impressive performance albeit in a losing effort.
Bowdyn Neely - ‘03 Defenseman - South Shore Kings
Neely didn’t see a ton of ice throughout the game but was effective when out there. He never overcomplicated and had pucks on and off his stick consistently. His first pass is always hard and does that all over the ice in any situation.
Ben Jenkinson - ‘02 Forward - South Shore Kings
Ben found himself with a ton of scoring chances throughout the game, he has good vision around the net and isn’t afraid to get pucks on and off his stick quickly. Supports pucks well in the offensive zone, also was impressed at how willing he was to eat pucks throughout the game.
Sal Cerrato - ‘04 Defenseman - South Shore Kings
Sal is an undersized right shot D who does a lot of the little things right. He plays with a long stick to try and help counterbalance his size, he’s a good skater who is smooth all over the ice. His offensive awareness to join rushes at the correct times is also impressive to watch as he uses his skating ability to make things easy for him.
