GAME REPORT - USPHL NCDC SOUTH SHORE KINGS VS ISLANDERS HOCKEY CLUB
12.11.20 - South Shore Kings (3) vs Islanders Hockey Club (2)
12.11.20 - South Shore Kings (3) vs Islanders Hockey Club (2)
Both squads are littered with talent for every level and we highly recommend that teams from NCAA and USHL programs come take a look. South Shore was able to battle their way too a 3-2 win behind a 41 save effort by 20-year-old goaltender Evan Szary. Below are some prospects scouts and coaches should be familiar with that performed well.
Scouting Notes
Johnny Ulicny - ‘02 Forward - Islanders Hockey Club
8GP 5G 1A 6PTS
Overall, a very solid performance from Ulicny as he found his way on the score sheet like he normally does. He showed nice touch around the net as he was able to use his soft hands to put home a goal in tight. Ulicny still needs to find ways to be more of an effective player away from the puck to take the next step in his career.
Patrick Somerville - ‘02 Forward - Islanders Hockey Club
13GP 2G 3A 5PTS
Somerville has always played the game with an edge and he is doing the same in Junior Hockey. All game he was used as a spark plug type of player that disrupts his opponent’s flow. He was effective on the penalty kill eliminating time and space. His first three strides allow him to win most foot races to loose pucks.
Teddy Griffin - ‘01 Defensemen - Islanders Hockey Club
16GP 1G 7A 8PTS - Commit Trinity College
The solid two-way defensemen was extremely effective vs South Shore. His gaps are extremely tight and he is very difficult to get around, especially in the neutral zone. Poised with the puck on regroups, he snaps a crisp hard first pass. His instincts away from the puck allow him to be a threat on the offensive side of the puck as he picks his spots appropriately to join the rush.
Connor Sweeney - ‘00 Forward - Islanders Hockey Club
1GP 0G 0A 0PTS - Commit UNH
Just coming to the NCDC Sweeney showed smooth skating ability combined with a nice skill set. In tight areas he uses his frame and lateral mobility to protect pucks to create separation for himself. Sweeney values the puck as he rarely turns it over. In zone he has vision in which he used to set up a nice back door chance. Smart changes, strong positional play in all three zones combined with his skill makes it easy to see his potential.
Billy Norcross - ‘03 Forward - Islanders Hockey Club
16GP 2G 6A 8PTS - Commit Boston College
One of the younger players on the ice Billy is adjusting to Junior hockey still. For his size he moves well and loves to play in transition. On the transition he manages the play extremely well as he was able to enter the offensive zone in multiple ways. He is not afraid to fire the puck and make a pass which is great to see from a younger player adjusting to Junior.
Avery Winslow - ‘02 Defensemen - Islanders Hockey Club
1GP 0G 0A 0PTS - Commit North Bay OHL
Winslow looks physically mature for his age and a player that should get some NHL looks this year. He was very hard to play against in the net front he was able to contain any offensive around his net. He anticipates the play very well and made the game look easy. He is not a burner on skates but he moves around the ice efficiently which allows him to join the rush when he has the opportunity too.
Cy LeClerc - ‘02 Forward - Islanders Hockey Club
4GP 2G 1A 3PTS - Commit UNH
Not one of CY’s better games in this one. His offense was coming from outside the dots and his timing seemed to be off on more than one occasion. Although, he was not great he still played with a ton of compete as he won battles and was effective on the PK.
Nolan Hayes - ‘02 Defense - South Shore Kings
12GP 5G 4A 9PTS
Nolan has been getting a lot of attention from big time colleges and rightfully so, but today he struggled a bit. Several turnovers on the offensive side of the puck, lost an edge that resulted directly in a goal against and a few mental errors. The kid has great instincts on both sides of the puck and all the attributes skill wise to make up a very solid D1 hockey player. He should see a commitment by the end of the season.
Alexander Babich - ‘03 Forward - South Shore Kings
14GP 2G 5A 7PTS - Commit RPI
Babich is learning how to be an effective player even when he is not putting up points, which has to excite the RPI coaching staff. He won foot races, one in particular beat out an icing after a long shift. He set up a few chances and showed off a quick release. He had a golden opportunity to score but two touched the puck instead of one timing it off the rush.
Ryan Stevens - ‘00 Forward - South Shore Kings
3GP 0G 3A 3PTS - Commit Yale
Stevens accumulated 2 assists as he was a big part of the South Shore come back. He plays the game with a ton of pace as he can get up to speed very quickly. Smart player in all three zones and supports the play very well. His game translates to college hockey and should be a factor for Yale long term.
Jake Cady - ‘01 Forward - South Shore Kings
10GP 2G 2A 4PTS
One of the best players on the ice Cady was able to show off his finishing ability as he scored one and added a helper as well. He competes in all three zones and is especially effective on the PK as a guy who disrupts the play. Cady likes to play the game in transition and always takes good routes to pucks. If he finds his consistency night in and night out, he may start getting some Atlantic Hockey attention.
Kyle Tomaso - ‘00 Forward - South Shore Kings
6GP 2G 1A 3PTS - Commit Trinity
Tomaso showed he has the ability to take over a game as he had a few shifts where he dominated the puck possession department. His first three strides make him an explosive skater that can beat most defensemen to the edge. He has very nice touch on the puck as he was able to score a goal in tight. Tomaso’s problem is that he can be turnover prone, sometimes he forces too many plays. His ability will be very effective in the NESCAC next season.
Evan Szary - ‘00 Goaltender - South Shore Kings
14GP 3.28 GAA 92.2 Save %
The three-year NCDC veteran is really starting to put together a very solid age out season. Although he is undersized, he competes like crazy for his team and gives them a chance to win every night. He is athletic, moves well and tracks pucks. Division 3 schools looking for a goaltender should be lining up at the door to grab this guy.
Chikara Hanzawa - ‘01 Forward - South Shore Kings
8GP 6G 3A 9PTS
Averaging a point per game Hanzawa is one of the biggest scoring threats in the NCDC. Here he put his South Shore team a head late in the game on a power play goal where he hammered a one timer home from the top of the circle. He is very dangerous with space and his skill set is great in the NCDC where it is more wide open which is why he is having success this year.
