September 18, 2020 EHL CT Chiefs 7 @ CT Roughriders 3
The Roughriders controlled the play early, but the Chiefs were first on the board, tallying a goal off a low cycle play. Jason Gordon 01’ opened the scoring as he threw the puck at the net from a bad angle that redirected off the goaltender's stick and into the net.
The Chiefs then used the momentum from the first goal to sustain pressure. Josh Haines 01’ doubled the lead off a faceoff as he snapped one high glove side from the point past CTRR starter Steven Turner 00’.
At the end of the 1st period , the Chiefs held the shot advantage 14-10. Many CTRR chances were foiled by Chief defenders as they had 8 blocked shots.
In one of the strangest plays ever seen in hockey, the Chiefs thought they had scored to extend their lead early in the 2nd period on a stretch pass, once again off a faceoff, but the shot was deemed to have hit the post. While the Chiefs were celebrating the goal, no whistle was blown, and the CTRR scored on a 5-on-0 breakaway to cut their deficit in half.
Ultimately, the call was overturned, and the Chiefs’ Jason Gordon was awarded his 2nd goal of the game, extending their lead to 3-0.
The Chiefs tacked on their 4th goal on a bullet from the top of the right faceoff circle which ended the night for Turner (4G on 22 shots). Adam Faust 00’ took the reins in net at the 13:33 mark of the 2nd.
The Chiefs’ offense continued to pepper CTRR throughout the 2nd period. They add a fifth goal as they found the puck in a net front scramble and elevated it past Faust. Later defenseman Mike Kubatchka 01’ scored on a seeing eye shot from the point to push the lead to 6-0.
Jason Gordon notched his hat trick with four minutes left in the 2nd period after a beautiful defensive poke check that lead to a breakaway.
CTRR finally got on the board late in 2nd just after a powerplay expired. They then tacked on two in the 3rd, but it was too little too late as the Chiefs held on for the 7-3 victory.
