The Byfield, Smith-Pelly, Thomas Line & Why Its Important
NHL
Hockey has always struggled with becoming more diverse, but last week, the game took a step. Quinton Byfield, Devante-Smith Pelly, and Akil Thomas became the first all Black line to play in a pro game since the 1940s. The storyline only improved, as the line would combine for 6 points, with Akil Thomas recording a natural hat trick in the span of 2 minutes and 43 seconds.
Charlotte Rush Take USPHL Premier & Elite National Championships
Tier III Junior Hockey
Charlotte and Florida battled in a tight, 0-0 game until Shane Hammer’s goal opened the scoring with a seeing eye shot from a unsuspecting angle. The Rush would hang on, and add an empty net goal to complete the double dip championship. Earlier in the day, the Charlotte Rush Elite team defeated Charlestown 6-5.

NHL News & Notes
Dubas Ready to Make Splash, if needed
Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas made it clear last Tuesday the leafs would be in the market, most likely at the forward position. With all teams worried about the flat cap for next year, the Leafs are most likely looking for a quick rental to boost their lineup for a cup run. In return, who would they give up? Robertson would be the top of the list for most teams, assuming Sandin is off the table.
Jordon Harris to Return to Northeastern for Senior Season
The Montreal Canadians prospect will be heading back to Northeastern next season. Why is this a big deal ? Its not really. Even though Harris has been committed to the Canadians, he could become an Unrestricted Free Agent next summer (August 2022). The 20 year old defenseman ended the season with 19 points in 19 games with the Huskies.
The Fiasco in Buffalo
After falling to New Jersey last Tuesday, the Sabres losing streak is now at 14 games after falling to both New York and Boston. Ralph Krueger has been sacked, and replaced by Don Granato, yet the team doesn’t look much different, though it is early.
Could we see a big shake up in Buffalo ? It is hard to believe Eichel becoming available, but forwards like Casey Middlestadt and Tobias Rieder could join Jeff Skinner on the block.
Trade Season is Upon Us
As April 12th approaches, its officially one of the most interesting times in the NHL season. Their are 2 important factors that effect this year more than ever : quarantine and flat cap. Next years cap isn’t moving, so teams strapped for cash need to start planning for the future. But more importantly, teams are looking to make moves ASAP, as players will need to quarantine before joining their new teammates.
Who is on the move? Ellis ? Palmieri ? Can Dustin Brown’s resurgence create an interesting dilemma for the Kings ?
