Weekend Review
Hughes Show
Luke Hughes had himself a weekend as then #7 Michigan welcomed #6 Penn State to Ann Arbor. The sophomore defenseman finished game 1 with 1G 2A, but after the Wolverines went down 3-0 in the 2nd period, Hughes would scored 4 of the 5 Michigan goals, including the game winner, in a 5-4 comeback win.
Down Goes #1
St Cloud St entered the weekend as #1, but dropped both games to Minnesota Duluth 5-3 and 6-3. 9 of the 17 goals scored were on the powerplay, with Minnesota Duluth’s Ben Steeves tallying 3 PP goals on Friday, and another on Saturday. After an up and down season thus far, momentum will be key for Minnesota Duluth, as they will face #10 Western Michigan this weekend.
Minnesota Doubles Up Spartans
After splitting their home series vs Michigan last weekend, the Gophers came out flying for 2 wins over Michigan State, completing the season sweep.
Minnesota put up 14 goals on the weekend, winning 8-0 and 6-3. St Louis Blues’ prospect Jimmy Snuggerud was one of the top players on the weekend, finishing with 3G 3A and 7 shots.
Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Matthew Knies tallied 2G 1A over the 2 games, now with 5G 2A in his last 5 games and averaging 5.2 shots per game. Arizona Coyotes prospect Logan Cooley has been an assist machine as of late, totaling 4A along with a goal over the weekend, and 2G 7A in his last 5 games.
Ivy League Rivalry
Important ECAC points were on the line as nationally ranked rivals Harvard and Cornell met Saturday night in Cambridge, both coming off Friday night wins. Harvard’s Matthew Coronato (Florida Panthers) scored twice, and Sean Farrell tallied 3A as Harvard defeated the Big Red 6-2.
Cornell defeated Dartmouth 3-2 Friday, with Harvard getting the OT win vs Colgate 5-4.
Denver Wins Battle For The Gold Pan
#5 Denver welcomed Colorado College for another matchup of one of the oldest college hockey rivalries. Magnus Chrona stood tall in net en route to the 2-0 Denver win, in front of packed crowd, stopping all 23 shots faced. Jared Wright would open the scoring in the 1st before Connor Caponi added the insurance marker in the 2nd. Kaiden Mbereko stopped 37 of 39 shots for Colorado College.
The teams will meet again at Colorado College this Friday 2.4.23.
Terriers Sweep Home & Home vs BC
Boston University took care of business against their cross-river rivals in a home and home series, taking game 1 6-3 on home ice before taking game 2 3-1 at Chestnut Hill. BU Goaltender Drew Commesso (Chicago Blackhawks) shut the door at BC in game 2, stopping 39 of 40 shots. Ty Gallagher put up 4 points (2G 2A) in the terriers 6-3 game 1 win, while teammate Jeremy Wilmer scoring in each game. Montreal Canadians prospect Lane Hutson finished the 2 game series with 4 assists.
BC dropped its 4th straight Tuesday night to Northeastern 2-1, and has 1 game remaining at UMass Lowell before the Beanpot tournament begins 2/6.
Hockey East Scores
Merrimack, 2nd in Hockey East, split 2 tight games with Vermont, taking the first 4-2, before dropping game 2 2-1 in OT. Entering the weekend ranked #17, Providence dropped both games at Maine 3-2 and 3-0, making it 4 straight after falling on the road to Princeton mid-week and Merrimack the weekend before. UMass Lowell defeated UMass 1-0 in a tight game. Goaltender Gustavus Davis Grigals posted the 28 save shutout for UMass Lowell, with NAHL product Luke Pavicich stopping 36 of 37 shots from UMass.
Governers Cup
The Alaska Airlines Governor’s Cup has been crowned to University of Alaska Fairbanks after their 2, 4-3 overtime wins over Alaska Anchorage last weekend. Alaska Fairbanks would come back in both games to force OT, including a Jonny Sorenson goal with less than a minute left to force OT in game 2. BCHL & NAHL product Payton Matsui and AJHL product Brady Risk would score the OT winners.
Champions of Connecticut
Ranked programs Quinnipiac and UConn, along with Sacred Heart and Yale, competed for the Connecticut Ice Championship this past weekend, with Quinnipiac taking the title after a comeback victory over UConn. UConn defeated Yale 6-1 in their opening game, with Qpac shutting out Sacred Heart 5-0.
SLU Sweeps Rivals Clarkson
St Lawrence and Clarkson met for the first time of the season in 2 game series. The Saints would fall behind in game 1 at home 2-0 before 4 unanswered goals in the 2nd and 3rd periods, leg by Greg Lapointe’s 2 goals. Game 2 would end with same final as 4-2, but SLU would get out to a 3-1 lead after the 1st, and did not look back.
Michigan Tech Sweeps Rivals
CCHA Goaltender of the Week Blake Pietila tied his single-season record with his 7th shutout as Michigan Tech defeated rivals Northern Michigan 3-0. He followed up the 20 save performance with a 26 save win in game 2, as the Huskies would complete the sweep, winning 4-1. Logan Pietila, twin brother to Blake, scored in each game for the Huskies.
RIT & Holy Cross Split
Atlantic Hockey’s #1 team RIT defeated Holy Cross in their opening game of the series 4-3 before dropping game 2 4-3 in OT. Carter Wilkie’s 2 3rd period goals would give RIT all they needed in game 1, with the BCHL product finding the back of the net again in game 2.

Union defeats RPI 6-0 to win its 2nd Mayors Cup in a row, have won 7 of last 10.
