North Jersey Avalanche (6) vs Jr Flyers (6)
The NJ Avalanche U16 team traveled to Westchester on Saturday for a showdown with the Philadelphia Junior Flyers. The contest featured a battle between the two top teams in the division and the game certainly did not disappoint.
Jr. Flyers
The Jr flyers are a well coached group that play with a ton of team speed. Their top line is skilled, and they are relentless on the forecheck, always buzzing around the net and creating chances in tight. They play a smart positional game and force teams to turn pucks over in the grey-zones. They can score in bunches and jumped out to an early 6-2 lead today before giving up 4 unanswered goals in the 3rd period.
NJ Avalanche
The Avs don’t have the high-end firepower of some previous years, but they have plenty of skilled players on both sides of the puck. They got out to a slow start today and dug themselves into a hole with some costly penalties, but to their credit they kept pressing and were able to dominate play in the 3rd. They have a nice balance of skill and speed up front matched with smart play-making D on the backend.
Scouting Notes
Luke Baker - ‘05 Defenseman - Avalanche
Baker got ejected for head-contact toward the end of the 1st period, but up to that point he was playing a really strong game. He’s a long, mobile defenseman with a good reach and strong 2-way instincts. He is active on the offensive blueline, can pull and snipe up top and is effective dropping down to seal-off the wall. He plays a heavy, gritty game defensively and uses his mobility and reach to quickly take away time and space.
Ryan Carr - ‘05 Defenseman - Avalanche
Carr is a good-sized, mobile, 2-way D who is starting to come into his own this season. He’s got quick feet and smooth hands which allow him to be very active with the puck. He flashed some dynamic skill off the rush and was strong moving pucks up top on the powerplay. He’s got to learn to pick his spots because at times he can get too cute with the puck, but his game is definitely trending in a good direction.
