Liberty D1 Falls to Florida Gulf Coast
D2 Florida Gulf Coast pulled off one of the top upsets of the year, taking down Liberty 4-3 in front of a packed crowd behind Jack Cohen’s hat trick. Liberty however showed their depth as their D2 program would defeat FGCU Saturday night 6-5. Liberty will take on a tough 3-1 University of Pittsburgh next weekend, fresh off a split weekend with Oswego State.
Louisville Takes down Alabama
Alabama avoided starting the season 0-4 after an upset loss in game 1 of their weekend series vs Louisville, 5-4 in a shootout. Despite entering Saturday averaging 49 shots against through their first 3 games, Bama found a way to salvage the weekend with a 4-3, come from behind win.
A Must Watch Brewing
Calvin and Michigan-Dearborn will face off this week beginning Thursday, a potential top 25 match up of two 2-0 teams. Calvin cruised past Cleary to open their season this past weekend, outscoring Cleary 14-1 in the 2 games. Krzysztof Petryla, a former point per game player for Kitchener-Waterloo in the GOJHL in 21-22, is amongst the nation’s top producers with a hat trick performance on Friday night. Michigan-Dearborn, who appeared throughout 23-24 in the top 25, opened their season with 2 dominant wins over Rochester Christian University 8-1 and 9-1.
Maryville vs Illionois State
After beginning the season with a 4-0 win over McKendree, Maryville split with Missouri State 2 weekends ago, falling 4-3 in OT, missing out on the home ice sweep. The Saints faced another top 25 program from a year ago in Illinois State this past weekend, getting the sweep on the road 6-2 and 5-2. October doesn’t get any easier for Maryville, facing top programs in Ohio, Liberty and Niagara.
ACHA D1’s New Program Making Waves
Drury University joined the Division I ranks this season and are off the a hot start, opening their season with a dominating sweep of Alabama, outscoring the Frozen Tide 11-4 and outshooting them 100-53. Facing a tougher test in Central Oklahoma this weekend, the Panthers responded well after falling 4-2 Friday in a tight matchup, taking Saturday 6-2. Central Oklahoma finished last season ranked #4 in the nation.
Villanova Off To Hot Start
Villanova finished 4th last season in the ECHA, and improved to 3-0 with a sweep of RIT this weekend. Dmitrii Kapranov shut the door Saturday with a 22 save shutout in a 4-0 win, followed up by 6-2 win Sunday. George Mason is next on the schedule to finish out September, before just 2 games in October vs Drexel and Lehigh.
IUP, West Chester Split
A matchup of two teams who ended 23-24 at the tail end of the top 25, West Chester and IUP opened their seasons with a split weekend. WCU would take Friday 5-0 behind 2G 1A by Aydin Thierolf and a 30 save shutout from Patrick Goldschmidt. IUP would find their scoring touch Saturday, tying the game in the 3rd before Hunter Freeman scored the only goal of the shootout, 4-3 SO final.
