Top 5 Matchup
Division I
The most important matchup over the past weekend was a battle of two top 5 teams when Stony Brook took on Liberty for a Friday-Saturday series. Liberty controlled game 1, outshooting Stony Brook 40-34 and never trailed in the game due to 2 first period goals by Josh Fricks and Chaydan Lauber. The teams would trade goals in the 2nd, 3-1 final.
Game 2 looked to be going the Seawolves way, Charles Peck scored his 6th goal of the season 3 minutes into the first and Conor Dempsey scored his first of the season to take a 2-0 lead into the locker room. Like Friday’s tilt, the teams traded goals in the second, and Stony Brook entered the third with a 3-1 lead. However, Liberty found a way back into the game, scoring 3 minutes in on Colin Baird’s 4th of the year and forcing OT with just 40 seconds left on a goal by Jaskson Vercellono, his 8th of the season. The Flames would take the game in a shootout, 4-3 Final.
West Chester Sweeps Lehigh
Division I
The Golden Rams improved to 7-3-0-1 on the season after a 5-4 win Friday and 4-1 Saturday against interstate opponent Lehigh. After falling to Navy on October 22nd, West Chester has yet to take a loss in regulation, and will could make some noise if they have another successful weekend. The Golden Rams face a sneaky good Duquesne team that just knocked off Bama, followed by a Saturday tilt in New Jersey against a William Paterson team that just played a tight split weekend with #18 ranked NYU.
Battle of Top NY / NJ Teams
Division I
William Paterson and NYU split their weekend series, with a 5-3 win for Willy P on Friday, and a 6-3 Win for NYU Saturday. NYU, entering the weekend ranked #18 in the nation, needed a big response in game 2, and received it with a 4 goal second period as well as outshooting Willy P in the game 42-26. Adam Marvin and Austin Teats each had 2 goal game on the weekend for Willy P, while Adam Svoboda and Isaac Davison each had a goal in each game, while teammate Thomas Huang tallied 2 goals in game 2.
NYU faces Drexel November 13th for their only game of the weekend before a home and home weekend November 19th and 20th vs University of Delaware. William Paterson will take on George Mason Friday November 12th and a tough West Chester team Saturday November 13th before heading to the US Naval Academy to take on Navy November 19th.
Minot State Continues to Roll
Division I
The #1 ranked team in the country took care of the Fighting Illini by a combined scored of 13-2 over 2 games, with 10 different players scoring for Minot. The Beavers had 5 different scorers in a 5-0 win in game 1, followed by 2 goal performances by Drew Carter, and Reece Henry in a 8-2 game 2 win.
For Minot State, they do control their own destiny. The upcoming schedule includes no currently ranked opponents until facing University of Arizona January 7th and 8th, followed by possibly the biggest matchup of the season February 4th and 5th at Liberty. The Beavers face Midland University (6-6-1-0), University of Jamestown (5-6-3-0) and University of Mary (12-2-0-0) to finish out 2021.
Delaware and Drexel Trade Extra Time Wins
Division I
The newly ranked #25 Blue Hens took on Drexel over the past weekend, a series where both games would need overtime. Game 1 went to the Blue Hens 4-3, behind 2 goals from Colin Emerich, including the OT game winner. Drexel would respond in game 2, as both teams traded chances, heading into the 3rd tied at 4-4. Ryan Rodrigues would tally his 3rd goal of the game for Delaware with less than 3 minutes left, and seemed to be the game winner. But Drexel had other plans, as Nick Urbani found the game tying goal less than a minute later to force OT.
With no conclusion in OT, the teams would need 5 rounds in the shootout. Bryan O’Toole made the save when he needed to, giving Eugene Lim the chance to play hero, and did not disappoint. 5-4 Win for Drexel. Ryan Rodrigues finished the weekend with 4 goals for Delaware, and Nick Urbani had a 2 goals and 1 assist in game 2, including the game tying goal with about a minute left in the game.
