ACHA Round Up
News and Notes from the 9.15-9.17 weekend + games to watch this weekend from ACHA Division I action !
Central Oklahoma Smacks Bama
Central Oklahoma made a statement in week 1, defeating University of Alabama 11-1 Friday, then 13-1 Saturday, outshooting the Frozen tide 119-38 on the weekend. Sam Sykes recorded a 4 goal performance Saturday, and finished the weekend with 6G 2A. The Broncos finished the 2022-2023 season ranked 6th in the nation, and will face Colorado State next before a touch possible top 25 matchup October 6th and 7th at Maryville.
D1 vs D2
Early season games lead to matchups between Division 1 and 2 programs, and we have already seen some upsets and close calls as Division 2 programs continue to increase their competitiveness. D2 Metropolitan State University of Denver defeated D1 Colorado State in overtime 6-5 9/8, while Rider University’s 3rd period comeback vs Lehigh fell just short, falling 4-2.
Games to Watch
Plenty of exciting matchups this weekend for ACHA D1, headlined by the top 10 matchup of Minot State and Liberty, as both teams finished last season in the top 5, and look to be early national contenders. On the east coast, William Paterson and Temple both look to remain perfect in a ECHA matchup Friday before William Paterson faces Towson Saturday. Undefeated John Carroll faces Grand Valley State for a 2 game weekend on the road vs a top 15 team from a year ago.
USA vs Canada
Multiple top ACHA program faced Canadian CIS programs to open their season. Minot State defeated University of Regina 5-3 and Briercrest College 5-4, while University of Ohio split with Brock University with a 3-2 win followed by a 7-0 defeated Saturday night.
Split Between Former Top 25’s
At the end of last season, both Illinois State (15th) and Missouri State (24th) finished in the top 25. Friday night’s tilt went to Illinois State 4-2, powered by a 3 goal 3rd period, including the game winner and empty net by Mitchell Oberlag. But Missouri State got their revenge Saturday with a 6-2 win, with 2 goals each Jacob Wiethaupt and Hunter Bulger.
West Chester Outasts West Virginia
West Virginia University visited West Chester University for 2 close matchups last weekend, with the Golden Rams taking Friday 5-3 and Saturday 2-1. West Chester had 6 different goal scorers on the weekend, while Jake Meier scored in each game for WVU.
Pittsburgh Bragging Rights
University of Pittsburgh dominated fellow Pittsburgh school Duquesne in a 2 game matchup, scoring more Saturday in their 10-1 win than the UPitt football team (6) vs West Virginia. Much like Saturday, Friday’s 5-0 win was a dominating performance, outshooting Duquesne 63-30. Olda Virag was a top producer for Pitt, finishing the weekend with 5G 2A, including a 4 goal performance Saturday. Pitt will face Navy this weekend, while Duquesne faces off vs Concordia Ann Arbor.
Temple Takes 2 in Home & Home
Temple faced TCNJ for a home and home weekend, defeating the Lions 7-4 Friday in Lawrenceville and 4-2 Saturday in Northeast Philly, in two extremely back and fourth, highly competitive games. Robert Pilarski finished game 1 with 2G 2A, while Hunter Ringwood finished the weekend with 1G 4A, and Brandon Barrett 4G 1A. Scott Margin tallied a goal in each game for TCNJ, who will face Lehigh this weekend in another home and home series.
