10.8.23 - Robert Morris 3 Bowling Green 0
Robert Morris after a two-year hiatus comes out strong with an impressive weekend split against a CCHA opponent. The story of the weekend was the play of the two net minders as Bowling Green's Christian Stoever and Robert Morris' goaltender Chad Veltri look at the top of their games.
Veltri a grad transfer from Niagara University, came back to his home town school and turned away 71 shots including a 33 save shutout on Sunday. Bowling Green's Christian Stoever, a Junior looked sharp all weekend with a shutout performance and posting a 96.2 save percentage.
2. Long Island University Packs the House
Penn State travelled to Northwell Health Ice Center on Saturday night to take on the Sharks of Long Island University in their home opener in front of an announced crowd of 1862 (2500 capacity). Penn State narrowly escaped to Long Island with a 3-2 victory after Junior Dylan Lugris found the back of the net in the third period to seal the victory.
For Long Island University it was a big step forward for the program as they hosted a name brand program for the entire hockey community of Long Island to see. For Penn State, their performance was underwhelming and will need to improve as their non-conference schedule continues onward.
3. Boston College Tops Defending Champion Quinnipiac 2-1 OT
Saturday night all eyes were on M&T Arena as Boston College (6) travelled to Hamden, CT to take on defending National Champion and number 2 team in the country Quinnipiac. Sophomore Boston College forward Cutter Gauthier, a Philadelphia Flyers 5th overall pick in 2022, sealed the victory with 9 seconds left in overtime with a beautiful shot that beat Quinnipiac's Vinny Duplessis.
The game took an early hit as Quinnipiac's Colin Graf and Sam Lipkin exited the game. Both players are a major part of the Bobcat offensive attack, which failed to really generate sustained offense. Boston College is a talented young team that will do damage this season in the Hockey East as they continue to mature. For Quinnipiac, Travis Treloar, Andon Cerbone and Mason Marcellus look to be the real deal this season.
